Why should you visit the Christmas markets in Olomouc?
October 12, 2023
The historic city lies in the middle of Moravia at the junction of railway and highway routes and main roads from Poland to Austria, Slovakia, and Prague. You can get here from Vienna, Katowice, Bratislava, or Prague in two to three hours by car, bus or train.
The organizers aim to combine the historical backdrop of the UNESCO-listed city centre with period market stalls presenting traditional crafts and typical Czech and Moravian Christmas dishes.
The festival includes, among other things, a large carved nativity scene, Christkind's post office (where children send their Christmas cards), Christkind's workshop (where children engage in traditional lead pouring or making walnut shells boats), a bell tower, a historic carousel, a Ferris wheel, and an ice-skating rink with a rental service. Visitors also appreciate a route along several viewing platforms from which they can watch the action at the markets and in the city. This year, the organizers prepared a "punch trail" along several stalls with traditional and popular Christmas drinks.
The program respects regional and national Advent customs, presents folklore and other ensembles, and gives space to local music and theatre groups. Every week, one of the leading Czech bands performs here. The goal of the organizers is to create a pleasant and unique atmosphere for the Advent gathering of visitors and the joy of spending time together with family and friends.
Thanks to the support of the city, a sustainable approach and a long-term growth of the Christmas markets, the Olomouc Advent is a household name throughout the Czech Republic and abroad.
Olomouc's Christmas markets have repeatedly been ranked among the prettiest and most attractive in Central Europe in polls and rankings of lifestyle and specialized media which have been informing about the event over a long period of time.
This year, the festival will take place in three locations - the Upper and Lower Squares and Tržnice (marketplace). After several years, the ice rink returns to the delight of children in particular. There will be 130 stands in all three locations.

Information for visitors
How to get to the markets?
By train or bus – i.e. you are coming from far away?
Arriving by train at the main station in Olomouc, you can take a 2 km walk to the Christmas markets or use public transport, see below.
If you're traveling by bus, you will either start your journey at the main bus station and continue e.g. with tram line No. 4 to Hrdinů Square or if the bus line allows it, you will get off at the stop called Tržnice (the old bus station).
Public Transport
The closest stop to the markets is Tržnice (tram no. 1, 5, 3, 7) or “náměstí Hrdinů“ (lines no. 16, 18, 4, 5, 7). From here you can walk to the square.
By car
You will find the best parking places in the vicinity of tř. Svobody Street or Tržnice. The nearest car park is at Koželužská Street 934/29. You can also park at the OC Šantovka shopping mall in the city centre and at the Legionářská parking lot, where there are also designated areas for buses. On weekends, this area gets extended by a section in front of the swimming stadium.
Toilets (for a fee)
-
Upper Square (Horní náměstí) – wooden-clad containers, women's and men's toilets
-
Pavelčákova Street – public toilet at the beginning of the street towards Upper Square on the left
-
Restaurants on Upper and Lower Squares (Horní and Dolní náměstí)
-
TOI-TOI chemical toilet at Tržnice (Market Hall) and other portable chemical toilets
Souvenir from the markets
At every stand with hot drinks, you can buy an enamel mug with a Christmas Olomouc motif in blue or red.
Charitable Christmas
We have set up three stands where charitable organizations from Olomouc and the surrounding area will present themselves during Advent. Here you can contribute to their operations or projects. A benefit concert for Olomouc wheelchair users will take place on November 26th.
At the stand of the “Dobré místo pro život” (A Good Place to Live) association, local businesses, restaurants and sports clubs offer guests punch and refreshments. Proceeds from sales go to charity.
The Lions Club booth also works the same way. The third charity stand is located on the Lower Square, where charities and associations present their work.
On December 11th there will be a charity punch sale with the Governor of the Olomouc Region, the proceeds of which will go to the Korunka Foundation.
Christmas Markets route
Upper Square (Horní náměstí) → Lower Square (Dolní náměstí) → Tržnice (Market Hall) → 750 m
The dominant feature of the Upper Square (Horní náměstí) is the Holy Trinity Column, a UNESCO monument, overshadowed during Christmas by a 15-meter-tall Christmas tree, the name of which is chosen annually by Olomouc school children.
You will have a magic view of the entire Upper Square from the newly built wooden lookout platform made of two shipping containers. The view of the Christmas-lit square is definitely worth it!
And while you are enjoying a hot punch or some titbits, your children can take a historic carousel ride or visit the bell tower. An accompanying cultural program also takes place on Upper Square.
And back to Olomouc’s nationally famous punches! This year we have prepared a punch-trail for you. So don't forget to pick up a collector's card at selected stands.
On Upper Square you will find our wooden village of 110 stalls where you can buy Christmas decorations and gifts, handicrafts, Advent candles and wreaths.
When crossing to Lower Square (Dolní náměstí), you mustn't miss the Christkind's workshop with the post office – this glass house is a place where children's imagination comes to life. Here, children write letters to Santa Claus, make candles or boats out of walnut shells.
The Lower Square hosts an improvised “tiny square” with twenty wooden huts mainly with artisan home-made products. Don't worry, we wouldn't let you freeze here either – there are stalls with the famous punch here as well. While walking around the square, you shouldn’t miss the nativity scene consisting of carved wooden life size statues.
Our walk ends at the Market Hall (Tržnice) where you can enjoy the beauty of Christmas Olomouc from a fifteen-meter-tall Olomouc Christmas Wheel. The Christmas decorated market hosts fifteen stalls mainly with craft items – ceramics, Christmas decorations, Advent wreaths, homemade products. After the walk, you would surely like to relax with a drop of something good to eat or drink in the Christmas tent.
What else to see in Olomouc?
If you have spare time in the city, we recommend visiting the following sights or events:
Exhibition of nativity scenes
Traditional nativity scenes are displayed in most Olomouc churches during the Christmas season. You can see different kinds ranging from ingenious mechanical scenes with moving figures to those in life sizes.
Advent tours of the Town Hall tower
We will add further information including opening times shortly.
Zoo and Holy Hill Basilica
Svatý Kopeček (Holy Hill) is a pilgrimage place where you will find not only the beautiful Baroque Basilica elevated to the status of a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II but also the Olomouc Zoo.
